Assessment and control of risks is fundamental to much of Environmental, Health and Safety management, and is a legal requirement in many situations.  A common-sense approach is needed to identify hazards and their potential consequences, and to assess the risks of harm being done.  Any action taken, and the costs incurred, should be proportionate to the risk, so getting the assessment right is vital.
